If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.Its  impressive in scale.  Its home to elite officials.And, for many of us, it  feels like were about as likely to gain access  (that is, real access) to it as a medieval peasant was to gain access to the kings throne.  But this is precisely why it holds such an attraction.Of course, the UN isnt full of people running around like chickens with their heads cut off, madly trying to translate a single speech into the roughly 6,500 languages of the world. No, instead there are just a handful of languages that everyone uses as diplomatic tools to get their messages across. What are the 6 official languages of the United Nations?As you m ost likely already gleaned from the title of this article, there are in fact six languages used officially at the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.For the most part, these languages being the official ones makes sense, since they include some of the most widely spoken languages in the world. However, theres also a clear political history behind the choice of these six languages.In 1946, just following the establishment of the UN, all of the current official languages except Arabic were adopted as official languages, and English and French were adopted as working languages.There are a couple things to unpack here. First of all, besides Spanish, all of these languages can be matched directly to permanent members of the Security Council who hold veto power (the U.S., Britain, China, Russia and France), which is to say that the languages that became official languages were the languages of the most politically influential and powerful nations in post -war period. Presumably Spanish was included because its the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers, though more detail than this is hard to come by.The second thing to notice here is that only English and French were included as  working languages  of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. The difference is that working languages are the languages of day-to-day professional exchanges  while the official languages are the languages in which  all official documents must be written.The other official languages of the UN were also gradually introduced as working languages to the General Assembly and Security Council, often coinciding with major political happenings. Russian became a working language of both the assembly and the council in 1968 and 1969 following the declaration of the Brezhnev Doctrine, a doctrine that asserted the right of the Soviet Union to intervene abroad, in November of 68.A few years later, Chinese also achieved the status of a working language, following on the heels of the Peoples Republic of China  being recognized as a permanent member of the Security Council and Richard Nixons visit to China in 1972 to ease tensions with the communist country.Arabic meanwhile managed to negotiate its way to being an official language by having the Arabic-speaking members of the UN agree to pay the costs of introducing the language for three years.What about all of the other languages?Okay, so maybe there are only six languages at the UN, but theyre such common and geographically diverse languages that most people in the world will speak at least one of them anyways, right? Not quite.If we look at a list of the total speakers for each of the six official languages  and add them up to get a rough estimate well see that UN official languages account for  less than half of the worlds population. Less than half of the people in the world can understand the documents and agreements being issued from the highest internationa l political body in the world.With half of the worlds population still out of the loop you would think there would be some push back. And there is.Hindi may be the most likely to gain status in the near future. With the fifth largest number of total speakers in the world, just ahead of Russian, it makes sense on paper. For those of a practical bent, money is also no obstacle as the Indian government has declared its willingness to cover the necessary expenses. The main reason for it not being included up to this point seems to be the relative isolation of the language, restricted as it is to the Indian subcontinent. One might be prone to believe that this is just a political exercise to extend Indias growing influence since the general impression of India is that its people have a high level of English fluency, but it has been reported that a full 72 percent of men and 83 percent of women in India speak no English whatsoever.Running down the list of possible candidates, theres also Bengali with 250 million speakers worldwide (and official support from West Bengal), Portuguese  (whose total number of speakers is sandwiched between Russian and Bengali and is more geographically diverse than either of these) and Turkish, though in this case theres only a vague desire to be a UN language rather than any coherent push towards official language status.Even the inclusion of all of these languages would still leave a broad swath of the worlds population outside of the scope of the official UN languages, but the inclusion of any one of them would  significantly change who has access to the primary documents of the UN.Become a UN linguist with your language skillsAll this talk of languages is great, of course, but why does it matter to you? Because this could be your job.To acquire a prized position among translators and interpreters youll first have to pass one of the UNs language competitive language examinations.  If you apply and manage to make it through the proces s, which takes several months, youll be put on a list and called up whenever they need someone to fill a position.However, this is just the general outline for applying to language-related positions. The specific job type that you end up targeting will determine any other requirements. For instance, if you want to be an interpreter of French, English Spanish or Russian you have to know not one but two other languages fairly well. Then on top of that there are the other formidable demands that are placed on UN interpreters, such as being able to translate subject matter on topics as diverse as finance and human rights on demand with little or no hesitation.And if you think translation (that is, translating the written word) might be easier since theres less pressure, just remember that translated documents are often cited by the media or incorporated into legislation. Not that this is a bad thing. Many of us would love to have that level of civic involvement and influence. Whereas a failing business would go bust, a failing bank will be bailed out. Should universities also fall under this category? Are they, along with banks, not so important to our society that they should be rescued with tax payers money if they are facing closure. Or if they are facing financial hardship should they be left to fall? Under new plans unveiled by Labour it seems that struggling universities could be rescued from going bankrupt, protected from `rampant` market forces. The Office for Students (Ofs) currently has the powers to regulate universities, and is able to offer financial aid - but there are limits to how much fiscal support it will be able to provide. The very idea of a university going bust will be surprising to some, with people being of the opinion that only businesses can go bankrupt, and that universities don`t seem to be structured along such lines as a corporation or commercial outlet. The fact is that, since the higher education sector is effectively a competitive marketplace, universities can certainly fail financially. They have huge overheads: having to cover the salaries of scores, perhaps even hundreds of teachers, lecturers, and other staff members. They will also have maintenance charges, costs for equipment, and may also have to pay rental charges for the buildings and land they use. If these financial obligations are not met, they will go under. Universities are of course in competition with each other - all vying for a customer base that generally only make a single purchase. The marketplace isn`t one where, if you lose the shopper to another company one day, you can entice them with your wares the next: for most students selecting a University is a once in a lifetime decision. Though it is rare for universities to go bankrupt, it is certainly not unheard of, and there are reports that 3 major Universities are on the brink of bankruptcy at this very moment. Chris Skidmore, the Universities minister, has recently stated that `providers may, in a small number of cases, exit the market altogether as a result of strong competition`. We certainly seem to have entered a more uncertain time for universities - the financial stability they enjoyed in the past seems to have gone, a point made by the director of the Higher Education Policy Institute think tank Nick Hillman, who was former adviser to the universities minister Lord Willetts: `A university going bust is more likely than at any other point in the last generation,` There are however some who oppose the protective measures - the shadow education minister Angela Rayner has recently pointed out how the OfS, an institution that one might expect to be steadfast in proposing pecuniary aid to struggling universities, has said it would `not bail out providers in financial difficulty`. Being an opposing party politician, it may come as no surprise that Mrs Rayner went on to critique the conservative party for the current state of higher education in the UK: `The Tories have unleashed a failed free market experiment in higher education. They have created a system that goes to the very heart of their ideology - a system where market logic is imposed on public goods and where the forces of competition run rampant at the expense of students, staff and communities. `Students would be left with immense uncertainty about their futures and entire communities would lose one of their major academic, economic and social institutions. Our universities are there for all of us.` There is a general feeling that there`s soon to be a serious review of the state of student finances, and that the financier Philip Augar is going to advocate a cut in tuition fees. This is the transformer, a piece of electromagnetic equipment that facilitates electricity’s journey from power station to plug socket.Without it, we’d have none of the things that are so normal in our daily lives. In fact, we’d have nothing electrical in our homes at all.That’s why we need to take the time to learn about these simple little things, these ubiquitous little contraptions. Because without them, we’d still be living in the conditions of the 1820s â€" or thereabouts.This article is part of our series on magnetism and electromagnetism. We wouldn't be able to transfer electricity without electromagnetism.connections between different circuits are crucial.And this is particularly true when we are talking about circuits that require different voltages. And this is the second major thing that transformers do: they allow the transfer of power from a circuit of high voltage to one of low voltage or medium voltage.This particular fact is really important â€" as you will see.Power Distribution and Power Transfer.But let’s take the role of transformers in power distribution first.Pretty much all electrical power in the world passes through a transformer at at least one point in its life cycle. It is incredibly likely, in fact, that it passes through several. Only the smallest fraction of electrical energy is produced by on-site generators â€" and so doesn’t need to be transferred.And so, transformers play a role in all the energy that comes into the conventional home.Electricity distribution happens on an absolutely mas sive scale â€" crossing countries if not entire continents. Considering that the electrical current has such a long way to travel from the producer to the consumer, transformers are often used to break up the circuit into smaller parts. This allows greater stability in the line â€" and makes it easier to isolate issues.Step Up and Step Down Transformers.The most common use of transformers is in their particular roles as a step-down or step-up transformer. These underpin the functioning of the whole electrical grid â€" and permit the arrival of any electrical energy into your home.Voltage vs Current.This is because the electrical grid works through transmitting electrical currents of extremely high voltages.Things like the National Grid, the electrical transmission network in the UK, can’t really use high currents. Generally speaking, the higher the current, the less efficient the transmission is. With higher currents, more heat is produced â€" and more energy is lost as it is rele ased through the wire.Current is the rate of flow of electrical charge. So, the higher the current, the quicker the electricity passes through the wire. And whilst this is all well and good, so much of the electrical energy is wasted if you transfer it over long distances.Voltage, on the other hand â€" or EMF as it is sometimes known, electromotive force â€" is the potential difference between two different points in a wire. This is the electric pressure that allows the current to flow. In other words, it is the amount of energy that is required to transfer current along a wire. These things are all using magnetic fields.Transforming Voltages.So, electrical grids use incredibly high voltages â€" rather than high currents. But there is an obvious problem with this. Whilst high voltage electricity is much easier and more efficient to be transferred, it is much more dangerous to actually use. Having incredibly high voltages in all our plugs would not be very clever.And so, the grid uses transformers to ‘step-up’ the voltage of the electricity before it is to be transmitted and to ‘step it down’ again afterwards. Before it can be distributed on a local level â€" and before it reaches anyone’s home â€" the voltages need to be hugely reduced, as the voltages in national wires are thousands of times higher than those that your laptop or your kettle could handle.This is happening with all of our electrical energy. So, you can see how important these transformers are for our lives.How Do Transformers Work?Now you know what transformers do. But how do they d o what they do? This is the question to which we need to give an answer now. And you’ll find that that answer is linked entirely to the force known as electromagnetism.Electromagnetism is the interface or combination of electric current and magnetism; these two things are two sides of the same coin. And transformers work by exploiting this relationship.Transformers are really quite simple devices. In their simplest forms, they are two coils of wire around a ferromagnetic core. Imagine this to be a ring of iron, on the opposite sides of which are two windings of copper wire.A current passes through one, and into what we’ll call the primary winding. As the result of the electric charge’s magnetic field, changes in the magnetic flux of the iron core will electrify the secondary winding on the other side. This, quite simply, is the basis of how the ideal transformer would work â€" through this process of what we would call electromagnetic induction.Faraday’s law â€" named after the man who discovered electromagnetic induction, as you’ll see below â€" states that you only need to change the number of coils on the secondary coil and you change the voltage that appears in the second circuit.Faraday and Magnetic Flux.It was Michael Faraday that discovered these principles of electromagnetic induction that have become central to the technology of the transformer.He built himself a little transformer exactly as we just described it above. And, linking one side up to a battery and the other side up to a galvanometer, he noticed that the electrical charge was only present in the secondary wire when â€" and only when â€" he connected and then disconnected the battery.This was the essential part of his discovery. When the electrical current was stable in the first wire, no electricity was observed in the second. What was required was the change in the electrical charge. It was this change that effected the change in magnetic flux in the iron core â€" which permitt ed the transmission of electricity.The Importance of Alternating Current.This discovery informs the way that transformers work today. As they only work with alternating current â€" as opposed to direct current.Whereas direct current is a stable current that only travels in one direction, alternating current â€" or AC â€" continually changes direction. This produces the change to the magnetic flux that permits the transfer of electrical current across the transformer â€" or, in other words, that permits the induction of electricity in the secondary wire.Without this variability of the magnetic field in the transformer, there could not be any transfer of electricity at all. Compasses use the same physical principle as transformers.The Importance of Electromagnetism.Michael Faraday made this discovery back in the 1830s. And, although there have been attempts to make the process simply more efficient, the fundamental principles of the transformer have not changed one bit â€" and nor will they ever.This is why the transformer testifies to the fact that electromagnetism is one of the most important discoveries in the history of our world.So, you better make sure you learn it.

See what he had to say about his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Aki:My campus is in Westwood, so it is very urban and the campus is safe. There are buses that have routes all around UCLA, and a car/bike is not necessary to get around. Having a bike is actually a pain because UCLA is built on many hills and the walk between classes includes at least one hill, and those hills are harder on a bike. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Aki:Honestly, my professors were not very available as they were very busy with their own research, and most of my professors (in Electrical Engineering) were not very sociable. The teaching assistants were the same way, as almost all of my TAs were international students and they were also busy with their own studies and research. The academic advisors were available, having office hours at their given times, and I was welcome to walk in at any time during those hours. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Aki:The dorm life is on the top of my list as the source of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. From making friends on your floor to meeting other people from other dorms through the people you meet, the opportunities are endless. The dorms in UCLA are all located on one ascending hill, so they are all built close to each other and the walk from dorm to dorm is very short. The dorm administration puts on social events such as ice cream socials and dances, and the dining halls at UCLA are very good. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Aki:UCLA attempts to represent most of the programs equally, but I think that the Engineering programs were better represented because of the number of buildings dedicated to just Engineering programs and the number of events and info sessions. I studied Electrical Engineering because I grew up dealing with and playing on electronics. The university did a good job supporting Electrical Engineering through the number of research opportunities and the company info sessions, but they could improve on the quality of professors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Aki:it was easy for me to meet people and make friends as a freshman because my dorm floor was very social and went to dining halls together for meals throughout the day. Greek life is a large influence at UCLA, but it is not for everyone, as it was not for me. It is a place where you can make more friends and form a brotherhood or a sisterhood, but some of the Greek programs are more known for parties, raids, and loose social conduct despite how hard some of the fraternities/sororities emphasize the importance of brotherhood/sisterhood and professionalism. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Aki:The Career Center hosts career fairs every quarter, and they are very helpful for networking and spreading your resume to obtain the internship or full-time offer you seek. I do not know about the career fairs in general, but the Technology and Engineering career fairs host many reputable companies such as Qualcomm, Microsoft, Apple, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and many more. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Aki:The study areas, in general, are very nice and clean, and are easily available most of the time. However, when midterm or finals season comes, the libraries are over-crowded and it is hard to find yourself a space to study. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Aki:UCLA is in the heart of Westwood, with many different restaurants, movie theaters, and other shops that make life in Westwood fun and entertaining. Westwood Village is a five to ten minute walk away from campus, so it is very accessible and many students go there often. Downtown and Santa Monica are easily reachable through the public transportation system, so many students take trips there over the weekend. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Aki:The student body is large at UCLA. The typical class sizes were large at best, and usually over-crowded. This made it even harder to reach a professor or speak to a TA, and getting into a class during registration periods was sometimes difficult. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Aki: I took a Digital Signal Processing Design class that taught me how digital signal processing systems work in general and how to apply our previous knowledge to create a program that would do a specific digital signal processing application. This class, unlike my other classes where the classes consisted only of book-learning, was fun because I got to program an application where I applied my digital signal processing knowledge to create a guitar tuner. UCLAs EE signals and systems classes lack actual application, and this class was one of the only classes where I enjoyed applying my book knowledge to real-world problem solving.
